Enrique Gabriel & danniBoi (academic artist project) We stay after school to practice the arts and get others to participate in the creative expression of self through music and academics. We like to freestyle acoustically a lot, so here is an example of our talents. StyleFreeJanuary 24, 2009 12:53 AM PST
AfterSchool Session (Enrique Gabriel, the Teacher & DanniBoi, the Student) We were ready to pack up, the students had signed out. Danni was wanting to jam out, so before freestyling we asked a colleague for some ideas for a song topic, and she mentioned that did not believe in love. The response is this song, another spectacular collaboration between scholars. The video shows not only an authentic fresstyle but a dialogue to create lyrics for the song. 100thEpisodeJanuary 15, 2009 01:00 AM PST
AcademicArtistProject - HowCOME [Live Version] / (Mr. Enrique Gabriel Legaspi, the Teacher, Alex Medina, the Emcee / Student, DanniBoi, the Musicican / Student) This is something remarkable, I am so proud to be a part of something special like this session that the three of us had in room 162. The timing is inspirational because it is the 100th episode to be posted for the world, but also it is a culmination of talent and a journey of scholars who share common purpose for their community. But also find music to express our love and skills to those who love and hate what we do. We represent a uniqueness, no one else in Boyle Heights or even in Los Angeles is showcasing the music we are making. The song HOW COME is a collection of events, all coalesced by the academic artist project. I have many achievements in my portfolio, but this is one of my favorites. It shows my work with students and definitely lets everyone know that students got art! I would like to say thank you to my family and true friends who have guided me...EL, SMS, GM, JML, GML, NYC<3> SoHoodJanuary 15, 2009 12:48 AM PST

Classroom Jam Session, an academic artist project (Enrique Gabriel, the Teacher; DanniBoi, the Student; Alex, the Student) We took a brainstorm and brought it to another level by collaborating even further! It was a lot of fun. I was tired from the day, talent show rehearsals, set design, after school program, meetings, and teaching...but it was a good way to end the day. Classroom Session (Composed by Student DanniBoi Senior Class of '09 & Lyrics freestyled by Enrique Gabriel Legaspi, Teacher) After school , students from different grade levels came by the class to visit and many are talented. Danny, wantd to jam out, and I am always down to rhyme and sing, especially after a hard days' work. He went to Mr. Don's class borrowed a guitar and we got in front of the photo booth and put together a lil' somethin that shows a genuine collaboration between musicians and people that have something to share. Lo Siento(9th wonder Instrumental) I made this song in response to the pain I felt after I did something really wrong. I make mistakes, this happened to be one of those where I had to reflect on my weaknesses and think about how to reamain ambitions and takle what hurts and make it into determination. There is a girl whom is the most special to me...she inspires me to be who I am, to push the envelope and take it to new heights! aFreestyleRapOctober 11, 2008 11:38 AM PDT

Real feel (9th Wonder Instrumental, Game) When I was writing the lyrics, I felt like telling a side of the story that purposefully used a combination of words that added to the passionate sound of the beat. At first, I just rapped the verse and played it repeatedly and decided to cry a melody in the background to give more depth or coloring to my verse. Why do I teach? I teach for the love, I teach for the real, I teach for the feel...I have something to share and connect with scholars. Education is cash flow... it pays. Dreamin'December 21, 2007 02:43 AM PST

HotMelody (Produced by JoshOne) She knows who she is...the song was pieced together like graffitti... I played the dope beat produced by JoshOne over & over in the headphones. I began to write words that resembled diamonds, however, felt more comfortable just styling the verse like a freestyle. The girl I hardly know, she is hot... The Midnight Special (John Coltrane, Blue Train Jazz) This song is beautiful, everytime I heard it I would feel positive. Certainly, it has a vibe that makes you want to humm new words along with the infectious horn melody...surely, it means something to anyone who hears jazz at its finest, from the great artists like John Coltrane. youRtheOneSeptember 30, 2007 04:07 AM PDT

This song was written when I was in college, I wrote this in response to the scent of a women. I wanted to interpret her vibrance with a description that is exceedinginly complimentary, but using a theme of Rhythm & Blues to tell my story. My sister gave me a CD to burn, she told me that the group is noted for being sampled a lot for their unique sounds and beats. I forget the name as I write...throughout my life my sister has influenced my style both purposefully and unitentionally. Certainly, a guiding light in the darkness of times. Discover. Define. Design.Develop. Deliver. (Hitman Instrumental) I bought the beat from iTunes, and used it ever since to pace a lot of written raps. Recently, I attended the 2007 MacWorld Conference with colleagues, and clearly it was an opportunity to see not only cutting edge technology but also learn so much about the future of multimedia and the possibilities of entertainment. In any case, students will use and have the competitive advantage when they are exposed to advanced techniques applicable to the technical workforce.

Babydoll (Renato Instrumental 2007) This song is mellow and is prose that was written after a challenging day at work. RicochetJanuary 30, 2007 07:16 PM PST
Ricochet (The Alchemist Instrumental) An absolute cinematic display, a barrage of quick, fast-hitting rhyme wordplay. No edits, just a raw approach to the mic, I heard a melodic ambience / overtone to compliment and glue everything together. Art translates into different mediums . In other words, I believe that I used my skills as a Piecer to piece together this 4-track ruff draft. When I decide to rock an instrumental the outcome is not fully realized until playback, it is amazing what tones are delivered and how I will add more words or take out vocabulary accordingly. Adapting to the pace and other important ingredients of a song is important because it will create "the bigger picture".

808 Edition #2 (Hector Ill Intrumental) This track is a true banger. Enough said. Academic Artist Project, Live in Effect. UtheFinestJanuary 04, 2007 10:31 PM PST
808 Series #1 (Hector Ill 808 instrumental) When writing to this sick 808 beat, I wanted to try so many styles, therefore, you hear different approaches. For instance, I went from poetry to mc to chorus melody to talking back to chorus rhyming...it was fun. Music, songwritng is an absolute "cool out". My cousin Hector makes 'thumpin' 808 beats and it was necessary to start experimenting witht his different sound. I like it. A teacher with skills on 808 instrumental makes my versatiity and ability to emcee evident. In short, "babe you the FINEST, its all pleasure at its finest...ok check, ok check..." RemarkableScholar (Renato Mixdown Instrumental, John Legend Composer, "Again" Sample, Once Again Album 2006) The chords and everything else makes just the instrumental heartfelt in itself. I listened to the actual song on the album addictively, it naturally makes your eyes close, it is absolute poetry. The literature of the song is unique because the choice of words beautifully compliments the piano. It is poetry.

WhereR'u?(Hector Instrumental) The sample piano on the track is well-picked, the tone is catching like a net, if that makes any sense. Originally, the beat was played to me at my cousin's house, we recorded a straight rap with a "chill rap chorus", vaguely speaking. In any case, again I was running through the different beats Hector had been creating, although we already laid a track it was necessary to lay another sound or a different creative approach to reading and writing for the song. All songs exemplify a process of creative learning and self-reflection to boost my own achievements. Enjoy. AcademicMIxtape!December 12, 2006 12:47 AM PST
RealTalk (Dr. Dre, Chronic 2001 Instrumental, The Next Episode) It is about midnight and I have been writing, planning, thinking, and organizing an array of ideas that are or will be encompassed by the ACADEMIC ARTIST PROJECT. Before going to sleep, I was listening to the Chronic 2001 album, and immediately after hearing this classic, it got me to rhyme and challenge the mic. I jotted some notes on stickies, and in 1 take, with 3 tracks, laid down a message giving further detail of the ACADEMIC ARTIST PROJECT. The West Coast is filled with talented producers...Dr. Dre is one of the elite, you want to learn something about Hip-Hop listen to the Doc.

aBeautifulDay (Pharrell Instrumental, In My Mind Album 2006) The track is so attractive, the drum breakdown, to the smooth vibe, so many elements that are composed together to make this a hot track. My intention when wrting the rhyme was to describe the feelings of the end of a long hard week. It is common for me to use the scent of a women to inspire, however, on this freestyle I kept in mind the beauty of the journey. Furthermore, give the message of complementing the beautiful day by giving back quality and respecting it. The Academic Artist Project is in Full Effect!!! theHauntNovember 04, 2006 04:02 PM PST

iKnow(Raphael Saadiq, Ray Ray Album, Save Us Instrumental) I got home from work, talked to my sister for a bit', than I went to the room with no script on hand. Selected a track to ride, chose this one, played it once through Garage Band and then sang whatever came to mind, I did have a message to send and inspiration to transpire, but what it is...is...what it is...In essence, I was really motivated to drop a song on the eve of my birthday, this is my quality. fresh2def (Raphael Saadiq, Ray Ray Instrumental, Chic Like You) The production is appealing because it draws the listener in, then in a nice transition the verse can begin. Station:Creative Approach (Alchemist Instrumental) This song is special because it is a collection of student work. While reading, A People's History by Howard Zinn along with other primary source documents provided by another text titled "Voices", students of the Georgetown Project were quite intrigued, therefore, used their higher level thinking to the ultimate degreee to challenge prior knowedge and formulate new interpretations that is more genuine of their own independent learning. The song is 3 different writings that I chose that resinated the same tone, thus I embedded them into one song. Each of the writings are learning activities that the students performed as a result of their reading and thier understanding of the context. Take into consideration that the students analyzed the various texts through written essay and classwork (i.e. SOAPStone or CREAtIVe Approach) In essence, the song is dedicated to the Georgetown Project. Don'tWasteYour...(Big L Instrumental?) My cousin hooked me up with the loop, when I was out in the San Diego scene. I wrote the verse, right when I heard the beat drop, thus, 'smooth flavor'. I put this song together in a crazy process. To explain, I first recorded a few days ago, but was unsatsified with the quality of my voice I chose to redo the vocals over. The second draft required that I create 4 different tracks in which I can lay out four different melodies that can simultaneously play together, just a step beyond ad-libbin, to the extent that more awareness of vocal arrangement is necessary. In any case, ENJOY! 1Time4YourMindSeptember 21, 2006 06:28 PM PDT
(Pharell, In My Mind 2006, How Does It Feel? Instrumental) The instrumental engages any listener from the get go, the vibe is energetic.

(Raphael Saadiq, Ray Ray Album 2004, I Want You Back Instrumental) As a fan of Raphael Saadiq since 'back in the day', it was exciting to get an album of his recent compositions. The "Instant Vintage" album was seriously instant vintage in that each song was composed with an originality that can be rare in today's music. The Instant Vintage album, a classic, because it gave listeners a fusion of "gospeldelic", a sound that is fresh and soulful. In any case, this beat is sick, a masterpiece.

ShopWindows (Pharell, In My Mind Take It Off Instrumental) The entire composition was written on the East Coast, when I had spare time I typed lines. Certainly, when you are in a different environment you adapt, therefore, I believe my style of writing changed or was influenced by the new environment, Georgetown University, Washington D.C.

Stilo(E-40 Ghetto Report Card Looped Sample Instrumental) It was the end of the academic year and a student walked in on a Wednesday with clothes that depicted the style and simplicity of "fresh 2 def" dress code. The gear and/or formulae was a White shirt with Black shoes, however, you can switch it up to be more appropriate for the particular occasion. In essence, the style is a guideline to colors for classic cool. GuitarAugust 12, 2006 07:26 PM PDT
PullMyString (will.i.am instrumental, Lost Change)The words were written years ago, circa, my freshman year of college. I just finished a summer transition program and was into writing from points of view, back then...flash forward...and now I am breathing more life into the words by reciting them accordingly. GetOnTheBoard (Pharell Instrumental / In My Mind) Pharell is a producer that certainly has classics with an assortment of high profilin' artists, for instance, Jay - Z, Gwen Stefani, & Snoop Dogg. In my opinion, he successfully orchestrates the authentics of R&B and embeds the genuine feel of HipHop, with even a twist of rock. The gist of this note is to express a profile, a background, an insight to the musical essay.

WalkOut (Dr. Dre, Chronic 2001 Instrumental) Cesar Chavez is an inspiration and symbolizes a united movement against an oppressor. The History department at Hollenbeck Middle School organized an assembly to educate our students more about the legacy of Cesar Chavez, however, at the same time student walkouts were taking place in response to the bill, HR4437. Thus, the assembly was postponed and moved to a later date. I was working on a powerpoint presentation to visually aid & engage the audience and wanted to draft an original song to accompany the assembly. This is my product...Since many students had walked out, the students that did remain discussed his legacy and I recorded their activism,"Huelga" to add to the song. It should be noted that Cesar Chavez, is a strong figure in the Boyle Heights Community...There are countlesss murals that commemorate his contributions. 4theHustleJuly 18, 2006 01:13 PM PDT

NewWays (iLife 06' Garage Band Software INstrumental) This song has a good build up, the verse was written as a poem. On the contrary, it also served as a lyric that was supported by fun ‘ad-libbin’. Hater (Kanye West Instrumental) I got this CD of Kanye instrumentals and this track is one that stood out from the rest, the sample matched the drums and the energy of the song was absolutely attractive. I originally wrote the verse on “I’m a Huslter” instrumental but I couldn’t get it to garage band because of ‘firewalls’. The verse expresses my optimistic attitude towards teaching and my belief that if you are being wronged, treated unfairly you must use your voice and take action. ImagineJuly 07, 2006 01:55 PM PDT
DoingThings (Hi-Tek Instrumental) This track makes mention of teacher pay, and the fact is WE MUST BE PAID BETTER and increase the height of expectations to increase student acheivement. GoodLookJuly 07, 2006 01:45 PM PDT
GoodLookin'Out (213 iLife 06' Garage Band Software Instrumental) Another example of my experimenting with both rhyme and song. Certainly, it shows a Libra balance approach to mixing up my vocal expression. Slang words are born everyday, and when ‘good look’ was coined I put it in my vocabulary bank. Thus, I wanted to explain my meaning of “good look” and when one can use it. It is a good slang word because it acknowledges positive actions and enforces personal integrity.

Maganda (Kanye West Instrumental) First of all, this Kanye beat is really 'dope'. Inspiration walks my way, everyday, on the contrary, there are some that scintillate and cause one to create and express the visual blessing. The opening of the song epitomizes the message of the song. “ I can die happy now, because I have just seen a piece of heaven.” The subject of this song was a fine-looking woman had passed me and it was similar to weightlessness on a rollercoaster. She was absolutely 'beautifly'.

213 Magnify featuring Will.i.Am of the BlackEyedPeas (Will.i.Am /B.E.P. Instrumental, Recorded @ Benyad's House circa 1995) This is the first solo project that I did. I was staying in echopark right across from the lake and back then I would record lyrics on the answering machine. The chorus is an old school freestyle that I recorded on the answering machine and fortunately I wrote it down. This song is an absolute gem. It is like jewelry that never gets lost, I had only one copy of this song on tape for a long time, and when finally technology got even better I was able to digitally remaster the song. Therefore, 213 magnify is digitally remastered, and absolutely a favorite of mine. I am pleased to preserve the collaboration with Will.i.Am of the Black Eyed Peas. Lastly, 213 is an important song becuase it portrays the vision of a student, I was a freshman in High school when I recorded this song, flash forward 10 years, still making music, but now from a teacher's perspective... R&B (iLife 06' GaragebandgeBand Software Instrumental)I produced the track with the intent to sing more than rap, however, as much as I try to record a singing verse I am never satisfied. On the other hand, it was still fun to compose this love poem. On the second verse you can faintly hear the Hollenbeck drill team practicing in the gym.

Don't Be Foolish ((iLife 06' GarageBand Software Instrumental)Rhymes can be written on all types of things, I will have pieces to a song in different clothing articles. For example, a ‘sticky note’ chorus in my pocket and a “napkin” verse on my jacket. This song is just that, a collection of sticky notes and napkins. The main message “Study your mind, don’t be foolish!” reinforces my theme of this “mixtape”. WorkJune 30, 2006 10:17 AM PDT

Park (Dr. Dre, Chronic 2001 Instrumental) Just a verbal showcase of rhyme experience and style over a ‘dope’ beat produced by Dr. Dre. Dre beats are INSTANT CLASSICS because he orchestrates sound that not only represents the West Coast, but reflects a style that is signature. EnergyJune 29, 2006 09:04 PM PDT

It was Joel my cousin, Gabriel my 6th period student, and I after school 'cooling out' in my classroom. My cousin made the beat in about 5 minutes, I dropped the verse in 1 cut. It was fun. SummertimeJune 29, 2006 07:19 PM PDT
Lopez2(R.J.Lopez iLife 06' garage Band Software Instrumental) This year had been rough for me, I was taking trips to different places to meditate. This one weekend I went to San Diego to chill with my cousin, my goddaughter, and his girl. He dropped this beat at the late night, while I was sleeping. And when I woke up, he showed me his musical accomplishment. I spent 2 hours writing the verses. My inspiration for the topic was driven by the vibe of San Diego and my thoughts of anticipating the summer. PremierJune 29, 2006 06:51 PM PDT

A new urban plan must be implemented in urban schools. The one formulated is too oppressive and tips the scales too unfavorably, O.K. there is equality, but EQUITY does not exist. At least not with the attitude that the students I teach are deficient and not different. The policies being created and in place only reflect the view of deficiency. Each classroom must have LAPTOP computers because that will serve as ACCESS to global diversity, American culture, and facilitate critical thinking. AccessJune 25, 2006 05:58 PM PDT

Podcast SummaryA voice of a Teacher. Educational Media. About enriqueEducation is essential, and public education serves millions of children across the nation, and billions worldwide. In many of my songs I made a concerted effort to intertwine and sway the listener to new ideas and vocabulary. Many words yall'â„¢all know, but I wanted to include familiar diction to make it a part of everyones conventional wisdom. My intent with this album was to express my concern for education and its current state of affairs. Being on the frontline, I see things that Americans are not seeing and must be reported. I am a teacher in Boyle Heights, educating young minds who along the way has swallowed facts and now is spitting out a strong opinion. The issue, "Why are students not meeting nor exceeding the standard? Many issues than stem off, like ACCESSâ„¢? The bottom line is public education does not give all students a competitive advantage. Technology is essential, especially laptop computers, it is the tool that all students must be equipped with because it gives opportunities that are limitless when comparing it to many of the already resources available in the classroom. (i.e. books, notebooks, pens, and glue). Basically, the purpose to this educational mixtape is to offer listeners a verbal assault, knowledge, a showcase of diction & syntax. I want you to find your favorite track, play it over and over again and know why you like it. For more insight, you can also check my POV @ www.myspace.com/teachinlaâ„¢
